Export Manufacturing & Regional Hub Economy
Export manufacturing and regional hub economy
Thailand is classified as an Export Manufacturing & Regional Hub Economy .
It has transitioned from an agriculture-centered economy to an industrial and export-oriented economy focused on automobiles, electronics, petrochemicals, food processing, and machinery, and currently serves as a major manufacturing hub in ASEAN as well as a tourism, logistics, and service hub. The World Bank regards Thailand as a prime example of a country that has successfully transitioned into a modern, industrial, and export-driven economy.
Thailand has long served as the "Detroit of Asia" based on its Japanese automotive industry, and recently, it is shifting its investment structure toward electric vehicles, batteries, electronic components, data centers, and the digital industry. According to the Board of Investment in Thailand, cumulative approved investment in the electric vehicle supply chain reached approximately 140 billion baht by the end of October 2025.
Country Definition
Thailand is a key industrial hub in Southeast Asia, connecting the ASEAN production network with the Indochina market based on manufacturing, exports, and tourism.
Why It Matters
Thailand possesses integrated supply chains for the automotive and electronics industries, international tourism infrastructure, ASEAN regional connectivity, and a relatively mature distribution market. Its strategic value is significant in that it can combine manufacturing, parts procurement, local production, and regional exports, going beyond a simple consumer market.
However, recent growth rates are lower than those of major countries in the region, and high household debt, an aging population, delayed recovery in domestic demand, and changes in the global trade environment are acting as structural burdens. While the World Bank forecasts a growth rate of 1.6% for 2026, it analyzed that a diversified export base centered on electronics and foreign investment in new industries could support a mid-to-long-term recovery.
Korea Perspective
For South Korea, Thailand is a market with high potential for cooperation in the fields of automotive parts, electric vehicles and batteries, electronics and semiconductor back-end processing, smart factories, food and beauty, medical and wellness, and tourism services.
Korean companies need a strategy that combines OEM/ODM with local manufacturers, parts supply, production automation, and joint exports to ASEAN, rather than limiting themselves to the export of finished products. In particular, Korea's battery materials, charging technology, factory automation, and digital manufacturing technology can be integrated with Thailand's existing automotive and electronics clusters.

MarketHub Point
